Your clients aren't Googling you anymore. They're searching you on Instagram.

Your clients aren't Googling you anymore. They're searching you on Instagram.

Here is a number that should change how you think about your marketing: recent research found that 67% of Gen Z now use Instagram to search for local businesses. That is more than the 61% who use Google for the same thing. Read that again. For an entire generation of customers, Instagram is not the place they scroll after finding you. It is the place they find you.

And it is not just Gen Z. Roughly one in four internet users now treats social media as their primary search tool. People ask TikTok for recommendations, vet brands on Instagram, and only then, sometimes, confirm the details on Google.

So here is the uncomfortable question. When a woman in your city types "lip filler near me" into the Instagram search bar, does she find you, or does she find your competitor?

If you are not sure, this article is for you. It is a practical introduction to Instagram SEO for business: what it is, why it matters more in 2026 than ever, and exactly what to optimise this week.

What is Instagram SEO, and why should a business owner care?

Instagram SEO (sometimes called social SEO) is the practice of making your profile and your content discoverable when people search inside Instagram, the same way traditional SEO makes your website discoverable on Google.

For years, Instagram search only really understood hashtags and account names. That era is over. Instagram now reads and ranks the words in your captions, the text on screen in your Reels, and even the words you say out loud in your videos. It behaves like a search engine, and it rewards accounts that speak the language their customers are searching in.

This is brilliant news for local businesses, and here is why: your competitors are not doing it. Most clinics, salons, studios and independent brands still post pretty content with vague captions like "Feeling fresh ✨". That content cannot rank for anything, because it does not tell Instagram what it is about. Which means the search results for your services are, in many local areas, still wide open.

Start with your profile: the five-second fix most businesses miss

Before touching your content, fix the part of your account that Instagram weighs most heavily in search: your profile.

Your name field is searchable, and it is not the same as your handle. If your account is @glowaesthetics but your name field just says "Glow", you are invisible for every search that matters. Change it to something like "Glow | Aesthetics Clinic Leicester" and you are suddenly eligible to appear when someone searches "aesthetics Leicester". Use the formula: brand name, plus what you do, plus where you do it.

Then your bio. The first line should say, in plain searchable words, what you offer and for whom. "Lip filler, anti-wrinkle & skin treatments in Leicester" will always outperform a poetic tagline in search. You can keep your personality in the second line; the first one is working for the algorithm.

Finally, make sure your category is set correctly and your location is filled in. These are ranking signals, and they take two minutes.

Put keywords where Instagram actually reads them

Once the profile is working, every piece of content becomes a chance to rank. Instagram reads keywords in four places, and the strongest strategy uses all of them together.

First, your captions. The opening line of your caption carries the most weight, so lead with the search phrase, not with a mood. "How much does lip filler cost in Leicester? Here's an honest answer" is a caption that can rank. "POV: you finally treated yourself 💉" is not.

Second, on-screen text. The text you place over your Reels is read by the platform. A title card that says "3 things to know before your first facial" tells Instagram exactly which searches that video belongs in.

Third, your audio. Instagram processes the words spoken in your videos, so say your key phrase out loud, naturally, in the first few seconds. If your Reel is about aftercare, open by saying "Here's the lip filler aftercare routine we give every client."

Fourth, hashtags and location tags. Hashtags still help Instagram categorise your content: a small, relevant mix beats thirty generic ones. And for a local business, the location tag is essential. Tag your city or your venue on everything. When local intent is in the search, tagged content wins.

The signals that decide who ranks: watch time, saves and shares

Keywords get you into the race. Engagement decides who wins it. Instagram's search results favour content that people actually valued, and it measures that through watch time, saves, shares and comments.

This changes what "good content" means. A Reel that answers a real question ("what to expect at your first appointment", "how long do results last", "how to choose a safe practitioner") gets watched to the end, saved for later and sent to a friend, which are precisely the signals that push it up in search. A trending dance does not.

So build your content plan around the questions your clients genuinely type. You can find them in thirty seconds: open the Instagram search bar, type the start of a phrase like "lip filler" or "balayage", and write down what autocomplete suggests. Those suggestions are real searches from real people in your market. Answer each one with a Reel, and you have a month of content that works for you long after the day you posted it.

Why this matters more every month

The shift towards social search is accelerating, not slowing. Search now happens across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and increasingly inside AI tools, and well-optimised social content is starting to surface in Google results and AI answers too. The businesses that build searchable content now are compounding an advantage that will be very expensive to catch up on later.

The best part, again, is the timing. In most local niches, this race has barely started. The first clinic, salon or studio in a city to take Instagram SEO seriously tends to own those search results for a long time.

Not sure where you stand? Start with an audit.

Here is a simple test: open Instagram in incognito, search the service you offer plus your city, and see who appears. If it is not you, the gap between you and that competitor is usually a handful of very fixable things: a name field, a bio line, caption habits, and a content plan built around real searches.

That is exactly what our profile audits are for. The Basic Audit (£70) reviews your profile and tells you the essential fixes to make first. The In-Depth Audit (£100) goes through your profile, content and positioning and hands you a full action plan, including how to show up in the searches that matter in your area.

Because in 2026, the question is no longer whether your clients are searching. It is whether they can find you when they do.
